Hello people! Welcome to a blog tracking Paul’s adventures in foreign countries that are not Canada… or Kanada, as they say here in Jermany. How dare you change the first letter of my country, dammit!

So, after 27 hours of travelling, including two delayed flights and one cancelation, I touched down in Frankfurt. The first thing I noticed about German was their COOL OUTFITS and the SWEET RIDES. See for yourself:

Futuremobiel?

Although Germany is clearly in the space age, they still employ 19th century for the pleebs such as myself. So I hopped aboard at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and cruised to Wurzburg… passing more paradoxes, such as 500 year old houses equipped with solar panels, a fairly frequent occurance.

Robert was kind enough to meet me at the train station… he had been waiting for four hours, due to plane difficulties and my silly decision to take the local train instead of express. He escorted me to my dormatory, pictured here:

Residenz

Just kidding. That is the Residenz, one of the palaces  enjoyed by the Bishops of Wurzburg, who held religeous, political, military, and economic dominance over the region for about 1000 of the past 1300 years. Apparently the people tired of the Bishops from time to time, so they would organise a huge army. At such times, the Bishop would retire to his other palace across the river (see below) and order his private army to fire arrows  down upon the people until all they either died or learnt the important lesson that being a peasent in medieval society sucks.

Marienburg

Anyway, my dorm is slightly more modest than that… but Yang, I am not living with 11 guys in one room. I get my own room, complete with bed, desk, couch, and windows facing the Ringpark, all for 150 euro a month.

That evening, Rob supplied me with a map and invited me to dine with him and Markus. After many brave words about my visualspatial abilities, I decided to forego the map and strike out for his place using only my sense of direction and my fancy. I  wandered past parking on the sidewalk and German fine dining…

Well, it turns out the streets kind of twist and turn… so I ended up in completely the wrong place and Rob came to find me. Needless to say, I was late for dinner. Sorry Rob! It was very good, however, and doubly so to reconnect with him after so long.

So ended my “erster tag” in Deutschland! More to follow some time…
